What is Punycode?

Punycode is an encoding syntax defined in RFC 3492 that translates non-ASCII Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) into ASCII-compatible strings starting with `xn--`.

Why is Punycode needed?

The legacy Domain Name System (DNS) historically only permitted standard ASCII alphanumeric characters and hyphens. Punycode allows domain names in languages like Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, or German to function globally.
